Questions About Our Heritage Walks?

Everything you need to know about exploring Craggaunowen and Lough Gur's ancient lakeside stories

Misty morning over Lough Gur with ancient landscape

Most of our guided walks around Lough Gur run between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the route and how much time you'd like to spend at specific crannog sites. Our Craggaunowen visits usually take around 3 to 4 hours if you're exploring both the castle and the reconstructed Iron Age settlement. We're flexible—just let us know your pace preference when you book.

Not at all. Our walks are designed for all abilities—we've got gentle lakeside paths and more challenging terrain depending on what you choose. Most participants range from families with kids to retirees. We'll describe terrain difficulty when you're booking, so you can pick what suits you best.

We run walks year-round, but late spring through early autumn (May to September) offers the warmest weather and longest daylight hours. Winter visits have their own charm—fewer crowds and dramatic skies—though you'll need waterproof gear. The landscape changes with the seasons, so there's something special about each time of year.

Absolutely. We work with schools, heritage groups, and organized tours all the time. Educational visits to Craggaunowen are particularly popular with students studying archaeology or medieval history. Just get in touch with your group size and dates, and we'll customize an experience that fits your curriculum or interests.

Comfortable walking shoes are essential—the terrain around Lough Gur can be uneven and sometimes muddy. We recommend layers since Irish weather changes fast, a waterproof jacket, and a small rucksack with water and snacks. Binoculars are handy for spotting wildlife, and a camera if you want to capture the views. We'll send you a full packing checklist when you book.

You can book directly through our contact page or email us with your preferred date and group size. We offer free cancellation up to 7 days before your walk, and we're happy to reschedule if the weather looks particularly rough. If we need to cancel due to extreme conditions, we'll offer a full refund or alternative dates.
